Training Tools

There are an increasing number of training tools available on the web for both general preservation awareness training and to address specific preservation topics. The presentations accessible from this website include PowerPoint and web-based tools and can be used with minor modification by libraries for training. The following are some examples of the types of training tools that are available. For more tools see the individual sections of this website.

Disaster Plan Exercise  A program designed to provide staff with experience in the implementation of an institution’s disaster plan.

Book Repair and Pamphlet Binding Demonstrates a number of the procedures used on a daily basis by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Intended to show both the complexity of some procedures and the range of preservation decisions one must make for each individual item.

Preservation 101 Online course presented by the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NDCC) and includes lessons covering Preservation Planning, Environmental Damage, Collections Care, Paper Preservation, Care of Photographs, and Emergency Preparedness as well as a resource list and care and handling guidelines.

Preservation Best Practices  This series of four archived webinars delivered in 2013 provide participants with an overview of the preservation standards for the many aspects of collections care, give benchmarks for measuring and improving preservation within an organization, and give guidelines for establishing a preservation program.

Society of American Archivists Professional organization for archivists presents professional education workshops and preservation institutes.

Society of California Archivists Focuses on the support and development of individuals and institutions that collect, care for, and provide access to the documentary heritage of California . The organization sponsors, along with the California State Archives, an annual Western Archives Institute.

Preservation Educator’s Exchange Provides syllabi and outlines of course materials as well as additional resources for training.
